Manchester United target Jean-Clair Todibo has revealed he didn’t want to move to Old Trafford this summer for fear of making a mistake.

Todibo was tracked by United following a spell of fine form for club side Nice in the French top flight.

United boss Erik ten Hag sounded out the £34million-rated defender as cover for Harry Maguire, who at the time was nearing a switch to West Ham.

The Frenchman has been a shining light since arriving on the Côte d'Azur and attracted the attention of a host of top European sides.

However, when quizzed on the prospect of a move this summer, Todibo admitted he had given it some thought despite preferring to remain at Nice.

“I'm not going to lie and say that I didn't have the thought to tell myself that perhaps I should play in a 'top club' to increase my chances [of playing for France], but there are also guarantees when playing at Nice,” he told L'Equipe.

After an ill-fated spell at Barcelona where game time was at a premium, Todibo made the switch back to Ligue 1 where Nice concluded a permanent deal following a successful loan stint.

Todibo has now clocked up 106 games for Les Aiglons and built a solid defensive partnership with former Bayern Munich centre-back Dante.

Nice remain calm on any potential exit for their prized asset with four years still to run on his existing deal however, Todibo is not completely ruling out a switch to Old Trafford or anywhere else, just yet.

“I experienced it differently from my previous situations in my career. My thinking was much more in-depth, thoughtful. I didn't want to make a mistake in my choice. I remained very calm,” Todibo explained.

“Reflection is much more important than when I started. I'm waiting to be presented with the complete project.

“What is expected of me? Why am I coming? You shouldn't arrive at a club like that. I know what I have at Nice. Why go into the unknown? So, everything must be clear. My first transfer, I was 18 years old. The thinking was not as thorough.”
