‘Eddie Hearn, get him on the phone!’ – Roy Keane called out for boxing match by ex-teammate to end 21-year feud

Roy Keane has been called out for a fight by one of his former Republic of Ireland teammates to settle a feud once and for all.

The Irishman was notorious for his fiery attitude during his career, with his 13 red cards across his career summing up just how little tolerance he had for opponents winding him up the wrong way.

But one incident in particular has now been brought back up.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast recently, Keane brought up his elbow on former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool player Jason McAteer, who was playing for Sunderland at the time.

The Manchester United legend said on the incident: "He deserved it. I wouldn't go that far [calling Mcateer his team-mate].

"Just cause you play with somebody doesn't mean that you are mates. Do you know what, what used to get to me is players who shout their mouths off. I didn't mind lads kicking me up [and] booting me, honestly. But Mcateer, as usual, had plenty to say for himself.

"I didn't deserve to be sent off in that game, absolutely not. If you ever look back in it, I didn't even catch him."

Now, though, ex-Liverpool star McAteer has decided to try and get him and his former teammate to solve their sour relationship that saw came to blows in 2002 - but not in the way you'd expect...

He told beIN Sports: "Yeah [I'm tired of it]. I'd rather he came in here now, and we just go, let bygones be bygones. Let's just be civil.

"Or we can get in the ring for £1million each and fight it out! Eddie [Hearn], if you're watching. Eddie Hearn, get him on the phone.

"Roy, come on. You're better than that. And I promise to stop reacting."

McAteer had initially reacted to Keane's recent comments on X, labelling him a 'clown' and giving his side as to why the latter and him were never close.

Roy Keane defends red cards and leaves Ian Wright in stitches, but blames Gary Neville for red card over Erling Haaland's dad Alf-Inge Haaland

He wrote: "Love it. Players shouting their mouths off!!!

"Funny You can’t shut the clown up now. And no we weren’t team-mates cause he never showed up and when he did he went home!!!! Please!!!!! Bore off."

Keane played for his country 67 times from 1991 to 2005, with most of his time spent as captain.

Meanwhile, McAteer played for the Boys in Green for 1994 to 2004, earning 52 caps in that time.
