USA stars publicly slam Sergino Dest for ‘inexcusable’ act – ‘It’s a complete lack of respect’

USA stars turned on Sergino Dest after the defender picked up two yellow cards in less than 30 seconds against Trinidad and Tobago.

The 23-year-old was given his marching orders during his side's CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal.

USA went on to lose 2-1 but managed to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory to progress to the semi-finals.

Dest faced the fury of his teammates after the full-back kept hold of the ball, kicking it away after disagreeing over a throw-in.

He was then shown a yellow card by referee Walter Lopez, with both Gio Reyna and Yunus Musah trying to console him.

Though a furious Dest continued his argument with a second yellow brandished, he blew a kiss in the referee's direction as he walked off.

Fulham skipper Tim Ream was quick to approach his teammate, clearly furious with his actions.

He could be seen yelling at him before he was joined by Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Ream expressed his displeasure at his teammate post-match, revealing there were 'choice words' at halftime.

"Not too many things I can say here publicly that we said privately," Ream said.

"It's a complete lack of respect for the guys that are playing, for the guys that are on the bench. It's a lack of respect for the game itself, for the referees."

USA boss Gregg Berhalter was also left livid with his player and provided his thoughts.

"It's inexcusable," he said. "It was surreal. It is concerning because that's not what we represent, that's not who we are as a group.

"We pride ourselves in staying mentally disciplined, battling through any type of conditions.

"Whether they're good decisions or bad decisions, we're supposed to keep going and respond in an appropriate way, and that obviously wasn't the right response from Sergino.

"He apologised to the group. He said 'it's not going to happen again'. As a team, the players, the staff, we need to hold him accountable."

Antonee Robinson put the USA one goal to the good, before Reon Moore equalised two minutes before halftime.

Trinidad and Tobago then secured the win on 57 minutes, with Alvin Jones making it 2-1, but despite the victory, it was not enough on aggregate.

Dest will miss the USA's Nations League semi-final in March, having previously been absent for this year's final against Mexico after picking up a red card.
